The Hudnut Company, Inc. offers both a line of engineered LED-based advanced solid state lighting (SSL) products, designed and manufactured by Hudnut Company, Inc. and as an authorized representative for the enLux Lighting Company, their line of LED flood and spot lamps, theatrical lighting, and outdoor area lighting products. Hudnut can also provide clients with custom engineered lighting that is specifically designed to meet their unique application needs and specifications. The Hudnut Company is incorporated in the State of Oregon, with employees based in Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii. Hudnut’s clients include federal, state, and local agencies, as well as commercial businesses. The company is officially certified by the State of Oregon as an Emerging Small Business and is listed in both the federal Central Contractors Registration (CCR) and Dun & Bradstreet (DUNS) databases, and has a General Services Administration (GSA) contract.

The Hudnut Company’s core competencies have its origins in its founder. Although it is a small company, Hudnut has a history of “taking the high road” when it comes to the development of new products. Their product design is not based on “profit margin” thinking, but instead, follows a path that results in products of advanced design that can have significant benefits for both the customer and the environment. The field of solid-state lighting is relatively new and the technology associated with it is constantly evolving. Hudnut’s ideas and designs lead to significant advances in the technology and several patents for innovative new equipment for these recovery systems. Having a history of working in new and evolving technical fields has taught Hudnut to think outside the box. Serving the Client
Because the use of LEDs in solid-state lighting is a relatively new field, many customers are not familiar with either this new technology or its many benefits. Hudnut has a reputation for working directly and closely with the customer to understand their particular needs and demonstrate how solid-state LED lighting can meet those needs while providing significant benefits. Because Hudnut is not a large company that mass-produces lighting, it can take a more personal approach with its customers and insure their needs are being met. While many companies provide customer service, Hudnut serves the client.
Profiles of Hudnut Leadership
John “Carl” Goehner, President – Mr. Goehner is the founder and president of Hudnut Company, Inc. Along with his engineering degree in manufacturing, his extensive background includes a variety of engineering and management positions with companies involved in both the electronics industry and industrial manufacturing, enabling him to provide the leadership and vision for the company. His work with several companies, including two he co-founded, has given him extensive expertise in product research, design, development, planning, and manufacturing processes. Carl is responsible for the design and production of all Hudnut Company LED light products.
Bruce Shaw, Manager – Mr. Shaw is responsible for many of the daily operations at Hudnut including inside sales and project management. His background includes a degree in math/science and over thirty years in the engineering, construction, and operation of waste chemical recovery, wastewater treatment, environmental process engineering, and independent energy plants. For the past five years Bruce has worked on collecting together a full range of quality LED lighting products that have both essential qualities of longevity and useful light output.
Aaron Leatherwood, Sales and Marketing Manager – Mr. Leatherwood is responsible for educating customers on the benefits of LED lighting, setting up distributor programs, working with specifiers, and creating and implementing the sales and marketing plan. His broad background spans over ten years of experience in the lighting and design communities. He has prior experience with lighting design firms, manufacturer’s representatives, architecture firms, distributors, showrooms, and contractors. Aaron studied interior architecture and design at the Academy of Art Collage in San Francisco and has attended several IESNA classes and Light Fair International seminars as well as numerous manufacturer trainings.
The Benefits of LED Lighting
LED is the most established and proven design technology in the relatively new field of solid-state lighting (SSL) systems.
Being based on state-of-the-art LED technology, Hudnut lighting systems offer significant performance and savings benefits over the older technology of conventional lighting, including:
Hudnut lighting units retain up to 70% of their initial lumen output after 50,000 operating hours of service (5.7 years) and 50% after 100,000 hours, and frequency of on–off cycles, ambient temperatures, and lamp orientation will not reduce the expected life cycle. Even under ideal conditions, high-pressure sodium and metal halide lighting units can only offer 20–25,000 operating hours, and fluorescent lighting has a considerably shorter life cycle. Hudnut LED lighting can dramatically reduce the high labor and materials costs of lighting maintenance resulting from the relatively frequent replacement of burned out conventional lamps.
LED lighting reaches 100% light output in less than 1 second. High-pressure sodium and metal halide lighting need up to 10 minutes to reach full light output, and much longer if ambient temperatures are low or if there is a momentary power interruption. Unaffected by the Frequency of Striking – Striking occurs when a lamp is turned on and the sudden introduction
of electricity “shocks” the lighting instrument. These “shocks,” or “strikes” degrade all high-intensity- discharge (HID) sodium and metal lamps as well as fluorescent tubes. These strikes significantly diminish or “age” the service life of the lights, and the greater the strike frequency, the faster the lighting unit exhausts its working life. Consequently, these types of lamps are designed to be turned on and left on, even if light is not desired or needed. Major lamp manufacturers include “aging multipliers” based on an 8 hour long day to calculate the reduction in the expected life cycle of their products due to the effects of striking. Compared to conventional lighting, the expected life cycle of LED lighting is unaffected by striking and the frequency of striking, making them well suited for use with timers and motion sensors.
Severe Service – LED lighting withstands vibration, impacts, and cold temperatures better than any other lighting method available. Many of our lighting products are designed for both indoor and outdoor use and perform under conditions where conventional lighting would fail prematurely or have a significantly shortened life.
LED light emitters contain no mercury. High-pressure sodium, metal halide, fluorescent, and induction (RF) lighting all contain small amounts of mercury. Use of LED lighting eliminates or reduces the disposal costs of burned out lamps containing mercury or other hazardous materials.
Because LED lighting is very directional and spreads only 15 degrees off the lamp centerline, our products put the light where it is needed, not into the night sky or neighboring properties. There is no wasted light – only directed light.
Lower Energy Consumption -
Properly designed LED lighting can provide both sufficient light for the intended
use and reduce your energy consumption. With its directional properties, these lights don’t produce wasted or excess light
– only what’s needed to do the job. Wasted light means wasted energy and higher energy costs.
Light Fixture Compatibility
Our Hudnut LED emitter array is designed to be compatible with most standard light fixtures and can often be retrofitted to existing conventional light fixtures and housings. This can result in a significant cost savings when converting from conventional to LED lighting technology.
Low Heat Output
Hudnut LED lighting systems add negligible heat loads to air conditioning or refrigeration systems.
There are two kinds of heat associated with any lighting. The first type deals with how hot the unit itself gets during operation. For instance, while fluorescent lamps operate at relatively cool temperatures, their ballasts get hot. Other lamps like incandescent, sodium, metal halide, and halogen get very hot. On the other hand, both the emitter and driver of LED lighting remain relatively cool. It’s this type of system heat in other lighting technologies that adds to the refrigeration/air conditioning heat load and can quickly cause physical burns if touched.
The second form of heat, which is infrared radiation, does not become heat until it strikes something and is absorbed. Infrared is a good outdoor heating source because its energy is used on the object being heated, not the air in between. All conventional light systems emit infrared to some degree, with fluorescent emitting the least and halogen the most. When infrared radiation strikes a heat sensitive object, such as shrink wrap or frozen and fresh food products, for instance, it heats the object causing degradation in the product and shortened shelf life of food because the added heat can encourage the growth of mold, fungus, and bacteria. Using infrared lighting with frozen products would increase the need for additional refrigeration to keep the product frozen and if a display product is shrink wrapped, the wrapping will continue to shrink until it fails and breaks open. In comparison with conventional lighting methods, LED lighting produces virtually no Safety – Compared to conventional lighting, Hudnut LED lighting offers a variety of unique safety benefits, which can directly and indirectly result in safer environments for the public and reduced medical costs and lost time for businesses due to on-the-job employee injuries.
Safety benefits of LED lighting include:
Reliability – LED lamps do not burn out. If a maintenance crew is not able to change out a lamp on schedule,
it doesn’t really matter, since LED lighting will last another 5 or 6 years. Although they will gradually dim over many years of use, LEDs don’t fail suddenly or unexpectedly, leaving you in the dark.
Works in all environments – Cold, dust, vibration, impacts, frequent cycling all have no effect on LED lighting performance. Hudnut LED lighting is always ready when you need it, regardless of the working conditions and environment.
Directed light output – Conventional lighting generally puts out light in all directions, whereas LED lighting directs the light where it’s needed, not into the eyes of the person climbing stairs or ladder.
Works with occupancy or motion detectors – Emergency or maintenance lighting comes on instantly when needed, without any warm up time. Otherwise, LED lighting can be turned off to save the energy normally used to keep slower conventional lighting turned on, even when not needed or desired.
Colors – LED lighting comes in colors for use in color-coded response lighting.
Low voltage – Reduced danger of electrocution because of LEDs low voltage operation.
No burns – No danger of burns because LEDs produce negligible heat and no infrared radiation.
No mercury – No health issues or disposal problems due to mercury content of conventional lamps.
Technical Specifications & Qualifications
Hudnut engineered LED-based lighting has been designed, tested, and manufactured to meet the highest standards of performance.
The general technical specifications and qualifications of all Hudnut engineered LED lighting products are as
IES photometric files are available for lighting designers. The module and array have all been officially tested and approved by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL). The operating temperature range of the emitter modules is -40º to +120ºF.
There are no limitations on lamp orientation or reduction on lamp life expectancy due to the frequency of striking impacts.
Hudnut LED lighting products can be supplied for 24 volt DC, 110/120 volt AC, 220/240 volt AC, and 277 volt AC.
Photo sensor, occupancy, and motion detector options are available for all engineered products.
Hudnut LED emitter modules come in a wide variety of colors and brightness intensities. LED emitters also come in a variety of power levels, similar to the difference between a 40-watt and a 100-watt incandescent bulb.
